Coming from a cheapo set of Sony Street Style headphones, it's like night and day. These are the best headphones I have owned. They fold up to a perfect size to fit in my tech bag. The sound quality is amazing for their size.

HD580 here, removed the foam inside the cups, replaced the grills and cord with HD650 pieces, and have been going strong for 7 years now.
Supposedly the only difference between the 580s and 650s, other than the grills and cable, is that the two drivers are more evenly matched in frequency output, and I've never noticed a difference in sound on the right or left, so guess I got a good pair.

Indeed, I can afford the HD800. It's only 1400. But to my ears, the treble was too bright.
Best headphones in my opinion are the Q701, HD600 and DT880.

I only use transparent amps dude. The O2 + ODAC is what I use. I had a (bought used) DAC1 but I sold it, those things have crazy good resale value.
I won't say it's picky. It's bright as fuck. But it's really designed for the audiophiles who like to roll amps. In other words, the HD800's sound is heavily influenced by the amplifier. See the HD800's impedance curve for further details.
