The closest thing to a cohesive response I've ever see is to brush away the tremendous number of flaws with the movie by saying it's an homage to whatever shitty, older French action flicks they're on about.
Look at the director's filmography. The only movie he's made that was any good was Bronson, and even that wasn't brilliant, it was just darkly humorous and visually fun. The guy makes vapid films for people who want to pretend that they're deep.
