Welcome to the Monero General, dedicated to the discussion of the world's leading decentralized p2p privacy cryptocurrency!
Monero is secure, low-fee, and borderless, meaning users can send XMR around the globe despite corrupt governments or broken financial systems. Innovative privacy features such as Ring Signatures, Stealth Addresses, and Ring CT (hidden tx amounts) ensure that Monero's blockchain is obfuscated -- the financial history of all Monero users is encrypted from the prying eyes of adversaries on a public blockchain, with transactions being visible only by a Monero user willingly providing a view key for a specific transaction.
Monero has also improved upon the scaling downsides of current popular cryptos. To avoid high fees, dynamic block size ensures that the size of the blocks will increase as the amount of txs increases. Further, the mining network algorithm RandomX establishes that anybody with a CPU can participate in mining, preventing the ASIC miner domination that creates a high barrier of entry. Lastly, the mining network will be preserved by Tail Emission -- instead of the block reward falling to zero like with Bitcoin, the block reward will gradually approach 0.6 XMR in May 2022, where it will forever stay. This constant linear inflation means the inflation rate will asymptotically go to zero while continuing to provide an incentive to miners to maintain the network.
If you still have questions, feel free to ask and a MoneroChad will be with you shortly.

can someone pls spoonfeed me on the mining aspect?
i've been ETH mining for a while.
wanted to get into XMR but never got around to it.
so, it used to be CPU mined only? and just recently, GPU's gained the ability too?
and, whats a good place to check hashrates of different hardware?
37 min later 27527575 Anonymous
>>27524257
Depends on your use case. Buying on kyc exchange you can later prove where have your Monero come from in case they gained value and you want to sell at profit paying taxes.
Also you can always loss your keys.
40 min later 27527872 Anonymous
You also have the benefits of privacy as no one will ever know your amount nor your transactions except gov in case you want take profits legally.

>>27524866
Seems like a pretty solid hypothesis.
>>27527563
The opposite. Monero switched to CPU mining because GPU inevitably gets BTFO'd by ASICs. With CPU mining you increase true decentralization and make 51% attacks significantly harder. (If you're reading this and it makes no sense to you the newfriend version is: China owns most of the computers that make bitcoin work, and they could fuck it up if they wanted to. Not the case for XMR.) Anon, there are good resources for mining on getmonero.org and r/moneromining

> RandomX is a proof-of-work (PoW) algorithm that is optimized for _general-purpose CPUs_. RandomX uses random code execution (hence the name) together with several memory-hard techniques to _minimize the efficiency advantage of specialized hardware_.
(emphasis mine)
Random code execution means random data dependancies and is therefore heavily reliant on having a fast cache. For this reason it is pretty cost ineffective to manufacture ASICs that have better performance than modern CPUs. This is also why the algorithm isn't that GPU friendly (GPUs are good at mas parallel calculation without data dependancies) so you'll find them having similar hash rates for worse power. You'd be better off mining ETH on your GPU and selling it for XMR.
As a result this discourages centralisation and mining farms. As such XMR's future isn't dictated by mining farms or ASIC manufacturers, it's hashpower is very decentralised compared to other blockchains making it difficult for large entities to influence it.
The commonly used mining software xmrig now includes a benchmarking leaderboard (https://xmrig.com/benchmark), for older stuff there's this site (https://monerobenchmarks.info/) and /r/MoneroMining.
Let me know if you have any more questions!

Unfortunately that's the cost of privacy through Ring CT. Your client has to verify all remaining blocks before it can confirm your transaction. Light wallets in other crypto are faster as they can simply trust that the head value of the wallet at the head of the blockchain is correct.

As it is, vendors often accept monero transactions once the transaction appears in the block. Monero has blocks every two minutes and requires 10 to be fully confirmed.

XMR needs to flip LTC and BCH. Both are literal shitcoins with no utility other than they've been around for a while. XMR enthusiasts need to meme this to life.
Feds should be begging for KYC exchanges like Coinbase to list XMR because if someone is suspected of doing something illegal, the only chance the feds would have to seize that persons assets is they put their coins on an exchange like Coinbase. Sounds dumb but criminals do dumb things all the time.
I fully expect to see XMR on Coinbase and the bullrun will begin.

Ciphertrace saying they can trace Monero transactions and then not even winning the IRS grant is still funny.
Anyway, the only way to "trace" a Monero transaction would require all the Metadata through kyc exchanges. so if you are a target, then you need to study Monero a little more to figure out potential opsec weaknesses.
To give you an example of what I'm talking about, sending Monero directly off of an exchange to a person, instead of sending your Monero to your personal wallet first, is a glaring opsec mistake that is done routinely by noobs. By just sending Monero to your own wallet first, you are automatically removing many of the techniques used to potentially deanonymize transactions because it is impossible to observe an individual's subsequent transaction history.

It is all a perpetual line of BS for them to keep getting paid by the gov. If they've successfully discovered ways to trace XMR, the price would plummet 99% within 24 hours and the chain would become vaporware. There was a bug like this in late 2018 i believe. Monero is ridiculously undervalued if there isnt anything wrong with it. Tbh though, i swing trade it because my gut tells me there is. Its not a mania phase yet, its the ending of the beginning stage of a bull market, where coins with "fundamentals " are taking off. If it doesnt make new ATH by the end of february or march (and other shitcoins keep doing the contrary) id be weary of it losing its spot to something else
