What if the power goes out. What if there’s a solar flare. Hard drives fail. Solid state drives fail. The digital world requires a lot of maintenance and it is in a constant state of decay and repair.

Depends on your country. Coinbase is the gateway for most people and you can transfer it after purchase. Or just leave it if you're ok with it being held by an American company beholden to the SEC.

Websites like Coinbase allow you to buy cryptocurrencies directly. In addition, when a new cryptocurrency launches, its website will probably allow you to buy that crypto specifically. For new cryptos, this might be the only way to get them outside of crypto exchanges, for which you need to already own some crypto in advance.

Coinbase, do a wire transfer, it’s quicker.
With that money you can buy BTC, or ETH, the latter of which you can send to metamask (crypto wallet you can get in-browser or in app store) to use to buy smaller altcoins on decentralized exchanges (DEXs) (be wary of gas fees, which run around ~20 on uniswap these days and ~7 on rubic, gas fees are the transaction costs of moving through the ethereum network)

>transfer to a personal wallet
This is always heavily advised, anon, and doing so is definitely a good thing, unless maybe if you're a day trader or you bought a small amount of Bitcoin. If you're a day trader, transfer fees and exchange fees might eat up your profits, while the small amount of bitcoin is going to get eaten up by bitcoin's retardedly high transfer fees.
Remember: if you don't control the private key, you don't control the crypto you "own".

if there's a solar flare 92% of the worlds money goes up in smoke, along with most investments and claims to assets not just crypto
you're shitting on crypto while undoubtedly holding fat stacks of digital fiat, digital funds, digital stocks, and digital indices that have all of the exact same problem that you're worried about yet with the one added benefit of being decentralized
