every country is like this, America's just the biggest one, so we have enough power to actually do it.
Iraq: We're a world superpower, no one's going to stop us.
Afghanistan: Same as Iraq.
Hiroshima/Nagasaki: Not only had we just become a world superpower, we had a weapon of mass destruction when no one else did. Also, we had the entire Axis powers backing up our actions.
Native Americans: Social Darwinism and "manifest destiny" made sure that no one gave a shit about the Native Americans until the late 1800s, and at that point people were too prideful to admit that we were wrong even when they knew. Also, I would say that more of the 20 million died of disease, we probably only killed around 5 million.

I still believe America, despite its obvious violations of human rights and illegal invasions of countries, is the most decent and peaceful world superpower there has ever been.
Compared to the British empire (massive slavery, genocide, oppression, not even a vague touch of democracy and freedom) or the Soviets (oppression, torture, genocide etc), we can be very, very lucky the USA is the #1 superpower. The Patriot Act also allows for the Federal government to listen to your phone calls, monitor your internet activity and email, and basically keep tabs on you, all under suspicion of terrorist activities or involvement.
