In a job I hate (police), but it pays about 100k before overtime, and gives me a half salary pension and full benefits if I stick it out for 14 more years.
If it wasnt for that goddamn pension I'd gtfo. I'm in line for a promotion too within the next year and half. It's just that I can't fucking stand it anymore, and yes, I've tried moving around to different parts and I still can't stand it. It's all just a big fucking game, nothing done here is set in reality.
I could learn to deal with it, I could keep trying to find a place on the job that I can tolerate, but at the end of the day bosses have almost total control over your life, I feel like a prisoner most of the time. Have a weekend you'd like to go away for? Nope, better hope they don't order you to come in. Don't kiss the bosses ass? Just wait until you fuck up sometime, and get the business.
I'm almost 31, and have a science degree with a 2.4 gpa. The closet thing I have to a marketable skill is a bare bones pilot license, and since that industry is in the shitter, what's even the point?
I'd take a pay cut right now if I could start something without having to go back to/minimal school, but I have no idea what. I'd love to sit at a desk all day.

why on earth would you be miserable and depressed until you are almost 50 just so you could make 50k a year. you can literally make half your salary in 6 months by changing industries but maybe working somewhere you actually like.
you and i both know that GPA doesn't mean jack shit in the working world so ignore that. what are you waiting for?

What you need is a routine
>I could learn to deal with it, I could keep trying to find a place on the job that I can tolerate, but at the end of the day bosses have almost total control over your life,
Okay this is going to sound dumb, but in the Wire the old black guy is in a pawn shop division, and the routine described is he gets into the office, the pawnshops submit the list of stuff they got over a certain amount of dollars, and there's a list of submitted police reports for stolen goods, and you check the reports submitted Vs the objects pawned for any matches.
What you need to talk to coworkers is about any position that has that routine. The thing about routine, is it's implicitly saying a job where you don't suddenly have to deal with your bosses new orders for the week.
>I'd take a pay cut right now if I could start something without having to go back to/minimal school, but I have no idea what. I'd love to sit at a desk all day.
I just find it hard to believe that as a police officer, you can't find a position where you'd sit in a desk all day, doing something like that.

my work culture is very defeatist. A lot of the guys here don't have the background I have and cant picture a life without this job. It provides everything for them. We constantly tell ourselves, yes its bad, but at least we have a pension/benefits/ 6 figures to literally doodle on the wall.
I've bought into a lot of this attitude, I've seen the jobs for entry level bio degrees and I'm not interested. I almost feel like I'm too old to start over, even though I know I'm not. I guess it's just a fear of the unknown.

He'd need to get his knees fucked up for that, basically.

The funny thing is where I am now is pretty low on supervision. I almost never see a boss. But the job keeps moving on its own: illegal quotas, retaliation for not meeting quotas, mind numbing reports, ordered overtime when you least want it.
The good desk jobs are for the people with hook-ups. The bad desk jobs are for when you get in a little too much trouble.

Okay. So you kind of just gave a solution to your problem. Your goal isn't to last 14 years. Your goal is to get enough hook ups so you can get a good deal job, and then coast for a decade.

>defeatist work culture
sounds like shit. you couldn't pay me 100k to walk in there every day and listen to that for 10 hours.
>biology degree jobs
what if biology is just fuckin lame and you don't wanna do it? you don't need to apply for jobs that are relevant to your degree but to your experience. banks are hiring for entry level jobs like anti money laundering and compliance right now. i would look into these positions.

The anti money laundering job is something I didn’t know I was looking for, thanks. The future can be promising
