20/m Every time I try to do something, I never ever follow through, so now whenever I do anything my brain is just screaming "don't even try, you'll never finish this and you know it" and I don't know how to break the cycle. >get motivated, study hard as fuck >burn myself out, get depressed for like a week because I didn't follow through >get fed up with feeling bad, study hard as fuck, burn myself out, etc etc >rinse & repeat How do I break this stupid fucking cycle? I'm just trying to go to college for fucks sake, everybody else can do it, why the mother fuck can't I do it? halp.

You are overloading yourself. This subject has become very popular in society recently with the absolute saturation of our daily habits with dopamine-releasing behaviours. Everything from swiping down to refresh posts on social media to purchasing items is designed to release unnatural amounts of dopamine and keep you hooked. A good litmus test to find out whether you have a problem is to sit still in your bedroom in total silence for 30 mins. If you find yourself feeling anxious, restless, fearful and antsy then you have a problem. Your inability to follow through on certain tasks comes down to the basics first. You need to build healthy foundations- you can't suddenly overload yourself. Recent studies have shown that willpower functions similarly to a muscle, and needs to be trained. Get your routine in order. Diet, exercise, sleep and hygiene. From there you can add more "willpower" to add small study sessions and reading, and from there you can add heavyweight tasks like big projects and ambitions. Focus on the basics first. Good luck.

>>19319932 Maybe you just need to look at the bigger scheme of things, and not just trying to go to college. If you have a goal that requires going to college, (I know you do) then think of college is something that you HAVE to do. As for following through, I had a similar problem or something. I had a mantra that just made me angry at myself for not doing shit when the time came. Dunno if it'll work for you, but it sure as hell worked for me. Best of luck with that shit, OP. I had the same situation.
